The Castle of Mey was the beloved Scottish retreat of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother, who purchased the derelict castle in 1952 and lovingly restored it over the following decades. It is the most northerly inhabited castle on the British mainland, sitting on the wild Caithness coast with views across the Pentland Firth to Orkney and the island of Stroma. The castle and its walled garden are intimate and charming.
History
The castle was built between 1566 and 1572 by George Sinclair, 4th Earl of Caithness. It was originally known as Barrogill Castle. When the Queen Mother discovered it in a ruinous state during a visit to Caithness in 1952 – shortly after the death of King George VI – she purchased it and spent the next 50 years restoring and furnishing it. She visited every August and October until her death in 2002.
