Dornoch to Castle Stuart: Golf Transfers with a Private Driver

Two of the finest links courses in Scotland, 50 miles apart. Here is how to play both without the hassle.

Royal Dornoch and Castle Stuart are two of the best courses in Scotland and they sit on the same stretch of coastline. Dornoch is 50 miles north of Inverness on the Dornoch Firth. Castle Stuart is right next to Inverness Airport at Dalcross. The A9 connects them in about an hour and ten minutes. For golfers staying in Dornoch who want to play Castle Stuart before heading to the airport, or groups arriving at Inverness who want to start with a round before driving north, this is one of the cleanest golf transfer routes in the Highlands.

The route: Dornoch to Castle Stuart

Leave Dornoch on the A949 and join the A9 heading south. The road runs down through Easter Ross, past Tain and Invergordon, crossing the Cromarty Firth on the long bridge. At the Tore roundabout, take the A96 east towards Nairn rather than heading into Inverness itself. Castle Stuart is signed off the B9039 near Dalcross. The whole run is dual carriageway or good single carriageway. No single-track roads, no ferry crossings, no drama.

Allow an hour and ten to an hour and twenty minutes. The A9 between Tain and Inverness has average speed cameras through the construction zones, so expect 50mph limits in places. Early morning departures run faster because you miss the commuter traffic around Inverness. A 07:30 departure from Dornoch gets you to Castle Stuart by about 08:45.

Castle Stuart and Inverness Airport: five minutes apart

This is the detail that makes the route work so well. Castle Stuart Golf Links and Inverness Airport are both at Dalcross, separated by about three miles of back road. If your plan is to play Castle Stuart and then catch a flight, the airport is a five-minute drive from the club car park. There is no rush, no cross-city transfer, no motorway. Finish your round, have lunch in the clubhouse, walk to the vehicle and you are at the terminal in minutes.

We see this combination regularly: golfers staying in Dornoch for two or three nights, playing Royal Dornoch and Brora, then heading south on their final day for a round at Castle Stuart before a late afternoon flight from Inverness. The luggage stays in the vehicle the whole time. You check out of the hotel in Dornoch, play golf, and go straight to the airport.

What the transfer looks like on the day

Your driver picks you up from your hotel in Dornoch — the Royal Dornoch Hotel, Links House, the Dornoch Castle Hotel, wherever you are staying. Clubs and luggage go in the boot of the Mercedes V-Class. There is room for four full-size golf bags and a suitcase each without stacking anything.

The drive south is a good one. You cross the Dornoch Firth Bridge, run down through the farmland of Easter Ross, and pick up the Cromarty Firth views before the road turns inland towards Inverness. Your driver can point out the Dalmore Distillery at Alness, Fyrish Monument above Evanton, and the Black Isle as you pass.

At Castle Stuart, the driver drops you at the clubhouse with your clubs. Your luggage stays locked in the vehicle. After your round, the driver meets you back at the club and takes you wherever you need to go — Inverness Airport, a hotel in Inverness, or on to the next course.

Playing both courses: Dornoch and Castle Stuart

Royal Dornoch and Castle Stuart are very different experiences. Dornoch is a classic links on raised ground above the firth — firm, fast, exposed, with natural contours and elevated greens that punish anything off-target. It is routinely ranked in the world top 10 and has been there for decades. The town itself is small, quiet, and completely built around the golf.

Castle Stuart is a modern links designed by Mark Parsinen and Gil Hanse. It hosted the Scottish Open multiple times and the condition is immaculate. The fairways are wider than Dornoch, the views across the Moray Firth are constant, and the design rewards aggressive play. It is a different kind of test — less about survival, more about shot-making and position.

Playing both in the same trip gives you a proper measure of Highland golf. One old, one new. One remote, one right next to the airport. Most of our NC500 golf tour groups play Dornoch early in the trip and finish with Castle Stuart on the way home. It works.

Practical details

Vehicle: Mercedes V-Class for up to four golfers with clubs and luggage. Larger groups can be accommodated with a second vehicle.

Timings: Allow an hour and fifteen minutes for the Dornoch to Castle Stuart drive. If you have a 09:00 tee time at Castle Stuart, aim for a 07:30 departure from Dornoch. Check-in at the club is usually 20 to 30 minutes before your tee time.

Luggage: Stays in the vehicle all day. Check out of your Dornoch hotel in the morning and go straight from the course to the airport or your next stop.

Airport connection: Castle Stuart to Inverness Airport is five minutes. For domestic flights, allow 90 minutes before departure at the terminal. For a 16:00 flight, finishing golf by 14:00 gives you time for lunch and a comfortable check-in.

Green fees: Royal Dornoch Championship Course is around £250 in peak season (May to September). Castle Stuart is similar. The Struie Course at Dornoch is around £100 and well worth a second round.
